Some list building advice needed.

I'm currently playing the following 50 rice list, and it is fairing pretty well but sometimes feels if it lacks speed and ki at critical times. What I would like to do is add in Fujin's Breath and/or Spiritual Harmony into the list but not sure if it would be practical or if there is perhaps better ways to gain an advantage.

The List

Wind Watchers Theme

  • Hokibo (14)
  • Bozenbo (13)
  • (Attuned Senses) (1)
  • Kotenbo (9)
  • Tarobo (7)
  • Zenkibo (6)

Please give me some ideas, what models would you change? Would stay in theme or drop it?

I have no experience with the wind watchers theme. I personally like Shepherds of the White Mesa more and even play it after the errata for the first turn ranged protection actually. Have you noticed any troubles with activations or with objective missions?
Those seem to me the possible problems of your list, but I'd like to hear how you've faired with this list? Or do your opponents also play 5-7 figures in 50 rice?

Commoner: No one will hear you, no matter how loud you shout. Just think. Which one of these stories do you believe?
Woodcutter: None makes any sense.
Commoner: Don't worry about it. It isn't as if men were reasonable.

I also love the White Mesa theme and have played it with great success, but I really want to get some more games in using my BIG birds.

As to how I faired so far; 4 victories 3 losses

3 losses was all in objective missions, two was against SW Bakemono hordes and one against ITO Clan

4 Wins was 2x Zone Control, 1x Objective, 1x The Messenger, Wins agains SW Alphas Theme, Ito Clan, Temple, Ryu

Haven't had to many activation issues, do sometimes feel like I'm caught out of position on the wrong times.

Getting spiritual harmony in there with a turn 1 channel from Hokibo (and still moving thanks to WW) is nice.

Just downgrading Zenkibo to a Zephyr gets you the rice you need.

I think 2 big bird is a bit much. You should try Hokibo in wind watcher and Buzenbo in White Mesa with some support to get the best of them.
If you want to keep playing this list, I would swap Kotenbo for Ryuhobo and Deflection. This way you'll get a good support that will move Ki where it's needed and provide some heal.

I like the idea of Ryuhobo in this list, it would solve a big problem for me. I agree the two big birds are too expensive. I don't think Bozenbo can be used in white mesa, tengu on 30mm bases only...unless this changed and I missed it. I think Kotenbo brings a nice all-rounder to the list he is pretty decent in defence with access to last stand and rise (4), he can also with the help of Hokibo do really good damage.

Yes my bad, I don't play the big bird often enough, forgot that. I only played Buzenbo in a very specific list with Ryuhobo an Qimmiq to make the best of his bow.

If you want to keep Kotenbo, you might consider something like this :

  • Hokibo (14)
  • Ryuhobo (7)
  • Convocation of Eagle (6)
  • Kotenbo (9)
  • Tarobo (7)
  • Zenkibo (6)

And either Deflection or the fan as protection.

Wogshrog's list seems better for the objective missions with just one big bird. However I would probably swap out the Convocation of Eagle for a Scout of the Blue Gale: the convocation is insignificant so won't help for outnumbering (although it can profit from it) or for scenario missions.

My experience of Ryuhobo is that he takes up a much-needed slot in the warband.  Hokibo being so expensive means all the models in a Wind Watchers warband needs to be able to do work.  The warband I took to the final table at... whichever Masters I last played in (2016?) was:

  • Hokibo
  • Kotenbo
  • Tarobo
  • Zephyr Guard x2
  • Kami of the Strong Western Wind x2
  • Spiritual Harmony
  • Deflection

The idea was to use Spiritual Harmony at the start of turn 2 to shift all the Ki from the Zephyr Guards onto Hokibo, which should max him out on Ki.  Then you use all the place effects and move speed buffs to combine with Dominate to simply walk up to a model of your choice and murder them.

The warband is so unpleasant to play against that I simply stopped playing it and moved onto the Jung Pirates.  It is a little weak against warbands with no specific points of weakness (Jung, STS), but does amazingly well against any warband where the power is concentrated (typically Cult or Savage Wave).
