Starting Silvermoon - Down Under

Gday all :)

New player buying into the Silvermoon mostly for the painting options but also because the game play looks pretty cool.

Interested in the thoughts of more experienced players for my chosen faction. Do they have the "variety" and "stamina" to last as an interesting faction?

Road to Iron Dragon

Our (only?) Oz Retainer Advance-Op is running the 5th Iron Dragon in Perth in August. He has started a State wide slow grow for Western Australia to get players ready. I am uncertain to attend (approx 5hr flight from Sydney) but  hey I can always use the motivation to paint :)

I've been distracted with real life renovations for some time but I have still got the following collection ( bought on impulse on an Oz BSS forum  ) and the intention to kick start some painting in the next week or so.

As seen I am interested in ALL the Silvermoon Syndicate :D , though mostly it was for the Buto minis I'll admit. Large nice miniatures that offer enormous potential to try my first free hand and tattoos in one :D . I also really like the Oyabun (Harukichi). It takes one stone cold... fella... to go to war with just a bowl of rice.... and is probably the furthest from my roots in WH40k 2nd Ed, "here is my gun and here is my sword" type poses.

Plus the faction seems to be one relying on oblique attacks and tricks which suits me over a more traditional combat expert type force.

Thoughts are mostly green silk and some complementary colours as shown in this tool here. Also, a large amount of tattoos for the Buto especially, but also smaller ones for the Shatei, which also ties in with the lesser amount of flesh on these minis to utilise.

The dream would be having 2 very different lists ready for Iron Dragon (should the holiday plans work out), to trial maybe the Rose Gumi and the Iron Fist Gumi lists or maybe a more general list for the larger 50 rice games.

Progress

Little bit behind the 8-ball on the Slow Grow. So to catch up:

Submit your first post about how you intend to finish your faction, colours, inspiration etc.

Check

Nov:
Assemble and paint one of your miniatures.
Provide pictures and descriptions for your blog.

Pending

Dec:
Take a break. Play some games.

woohoo - nothing (over)due! :D

Jan:
Assemble and paint the second of your miniatures.
Provide pictures and descriptions for your blog.

Pending

Feb:
Assemble and paint the third of your miniatures.
Provide pictures and descriptions for your blog.

Assemble and paint the fourth of your miniatures.
Provide pictures and descriptions for your blog.

Looks like I'm due about 4 minis to be cranked out in short order. I tend to be a quick painter (it's just that starting takes years normally  ). So hopefully I can make a start in the existing batch before the end of the month. I was keen to pick up the other options for the faction as well but am holding firm to not buying more until the these are all painted... see how long that lasts.

One thing that does vex me slightly is not having access to the extra options in a rules pack unless I buy the card packs. There seems to be an option for alternate forces organisations (Buto/ Roses) as well as a Gorilla, some Ronin ashigaru, and some non-named Roses to gain on top of the existing minis. Plus, not being able to read up on the extra tricks and options for other factions without a significant outlay (>$120 or so  )  is hard for a 'completionist' like me :P

Either way, hope to post some coloured (ie painted) pics up soon on my progress.

Cheers :)

Hi and welcome to a great game :) I applaud your choice of the gangstas (as they are my fav faction next to the unreleased Shiho/Eagle). As you say they are a mix of trickery and wicked fighting, yet offers a colour palette ranging from bright silks to earthy nature patters if you prefer the poor footpad style. I do that myself beyond some red on the named fighters and the Oyabun who gets a splash of course!

Pity on the scarce community. For some reason did I believe there´s was a fairly vibrant one down under?

On the topic of the extra cards they really offer a boatload of tricks! The Gorilla is a bargain and the deserter is a dark horse imho. A faction that has both Channel, Leech and Pass tokens is well into the command and control which is a proven strategy. Just ask anyone who played Ruy with Hiro making his speech ;)

Cheers MattT,

There is a big group in Perth, Western Australia. But that is approx 5hr flight from Eastern Australia so not a go to for weekly or even fortnightly gaming ;) :P .

Few down in Melbourne as well but also a 1.5 hour flight.

Once I get my painting on I will investigate further to smoke out some of the scattered groups who may be playing in Sydney.

Any links to your own pics of the STS? :)

Cheers

Unfortunately don´t I have any pics of my STS. I´m an indifferent photographer is the best explanation I guess :)

About the themes. They are both with flaws and perks.

Iron Fist is nice as you get a 3 Ki refund per turn, yet I dislike the no ranged clause as STS isn´t that good at killing stuff in melee unless you manage to tire the opponent out through Oda´s order or attrition through cheap animals and Kyoaku-Hans. It´s more efficient to throw them with Manu, control who moves next so you can be sure the target doesn´t move, turn them with Saki etc and then pepper them with crossbow bolts.

I haven´t tried the Rose theme for the reason that it disallows Butos and the Sentinel which are the best defensive models STS have and, as mentioned above, the faction needs stability in the line as it´s nowhere near Samurai level ability of killing stuff in melee. Just wait until you had your first 10 wound Buto decapitated by a Takahashi. That said the 1 rice discount on special cards is powerful. STS has a million evil things to do if allowed, so this could be a winner. Unfortunately are the generic Roses Ki 1 which hamstrings their usefullness as harassers, but otoh are they 3 MS models with a ton of scenario enabling traits on top. It would take some testing to find the best formula as options are more plentiful that most other factions.

Have fallen well behind on the slow grow. I'm was always more a cram kinda guy anyway blush

Local retailer had a sale on and I took advantage to buy a significant number of the remaining models. On the plus side, as I explained to the Minster of Finance wink , I avoided the temptation to buy the Kage Ninja faction at the same time.  Figured the Silvermoons seem to have 3-4 solid themes internal to their own faction already and thus plenty to play with prior to branching out at some point.. So batch painting is the order of the day. I'd have them all on the go, but as always misplaced a critical tol (in this case Super Glue) when i sit down to assemble blush.

Turquoise is decided as the main "Silvermoon House Colour", with thanks to Trials of the Michi (and especially monders)  for inspiration.  Grey will be the main cloth colour for the Shatei and even Harukichi etc as the base thug colours. The Iron Fist Gumi Buto/ Oda will have Gold as their key colour with the Turquoise as the belts etc. Manu is the exception as he is the Bodyguard of Haruchiki. So he wears more Turquoise with a splash of Gold.  The Roses/ Hanami will have the Turquoise, Silver (in place of gold), and one other main colour yet to be decided.

Enough yabber, pics or it didn't happen smiley
