Ki and the Gorilla

PLayed the gorilla for the first time yesterday and have a quick query.

He generates 2 Ki per turn, but unless I'm missing something there is nothing he can do with it.

He has no Ki feats, and cannot ki boost any of his statistics, so are they just there to be leeched off by Ekusa or Shisa each turn or is there something I've missed? I play against Ryu btw.

I bought the model because it's stunning and to have another damage dealer alongside Kenko, but with a low melee pool of 3 he struggled to inflict much damage.

It feels like he's actually there to tank and soak up hits while others offer healing support to keep his wounds topped up, but then again the Agressive trait means that you have to throw more attack dice than defence which doesn't necessarily fit either.

I was interested to find out how other people have found playing him?

I will only answer the ki part. As you have 2/0, once you have 2 ki you immediatly loose them: you cannot have more ki than the second number (here 0). This stat is only useful for the fear test or any ki-based test.

Damaging the Prefecture in straight melee is always difficult.

But the Guardian has MS 3, which really isn't bad, Brutal (1) which is very good, and +2 strength.
That's a pretty good hitter.

He shouldn't stand alone against most Prefecture models, however. Not many should.

I agree with henrix here- with +2 strength negating most of teh prefectures armour (all of an ashigaru's) and Brutal giving you +1 to your melee score the gorilla should be pretty good at mashing most prefecture other than samurai, but he does work better with support- try a fire kami next to him for instance.

You can also throw around MS2 guys when trying to control space or clearing an objective.

Gorilla is nice but you need to choose carefuly your prey. The worst part is that he is Agressive. Against ashigaru this can be pain in the ass cause they have First Strike and Push attack, and can negate you the possibility to attack them.

The best way to use The Guardian is like support attacker. Try allways to attack to an allready fighting enemy. This way he loses 1 dice because outnumber, and usualy do one of those things:

If this enemy has 2 or 1 dice and you think you can kill him (6 or less wounds, no toughness etc), throw 2 attack and 1 deffence, or even 3 attack. Every dice your opponent put in attack are more chances for you to killing him. He allways can score 6s but you need to deal with it (6s happens, but 1s too). 3 attack dice is usualy a high score +1 due to brutal. With his +2 damage, almost everytime you deal damage.

If the enemy has 1 dice, you can instead  use combo attack with2 dices. If he rolls low, probably you will kill him.

Against the same enemy, if you think you cannot kill him or there is another enemy near, spend one dice, but use Throw attack. Are 2 dices vs 2 dices, but you have a +1 due to Brutal, and only need SL 0. Higher SL are free damage, but the intention is to Tire and prone the model, and even another model in the process.

Like a lone warrior the Guardian is much weaker. As a recomendation never fight against First strike models or models with 4 dices.

Hope that helps ^^

Also remember that gorilla is a 5 movememnt model with 8 wounds that captures objectives! Very usefull

Have fun!.

You can also use it as a trap.
Place your gorilla on a flank, with the air kami next to him.
Considering the charge radius, your ryu fow should place spearmen to protect the flanks, opening gaps in his lines.
If he does not do it, well ... charge!

Also note that Agressive should mean that he cannot throw MORE dice in defence than attack. It was errata'ed on the forum by Master T, if I remember correctly.

Yep, Yinkin is correct. It's an important point.

Wow, thanks for all the helpful tips! I'm already looking forward to having another go with him and the point about ganging up on Ryu models is a very good one, in fact I think the biggest lesson of the games I've played so far.

I'm looking at running the Gorilla and Riku as a tag team and ganging up on models one by one.

Thanks for the advice!

With the Gorilla although he cannot hold onto Ki can it still be leeched off during the turn it was generated?

Bugger!!

Was hoping he would at least contribute a couple of Ki - leeched and channeled in a monk list....

now I can't decide between him and Seiji?!?
