Kabocha no ito desu - and Studio paintjobs...and Temple

KABOCHA's picture

Evening all. I've finally got around to assembling and painting my Indiegogo Ito.First up are Kenzo (the beast) Ito and the male bushi.

Greeny's picture

Lovely muted colour scheme, those are beautiful!

Lovely! Very natural colours. The steely scales on Kenzo are beautiful.

Sickeningly good, as always!

Impressive! Very nice work with the lights on kenzo, very precise.
Probably the best i saw.
Where are your bases from?

Cheers all, they're only muted because of my terrible photography; Rob, you'll see them tomorrow night.

Mal, they're home made, just milliput and pumice paste. I'll post a step by step when I get my hands on Kaihime, all the other bases are completed and primed.

They look lovely. I only wish I could paint just half as good. Like the bases they take nothing away from the figure but set them off nicely.

Mr Stu

they look great, the bases in particular are so well done, im tempted by the ito and this is adding to the cause big time lookin forward to more

Gorgeous as always Hedley :)

Latest updates (courtesy of an extended bank holiday weekend) are Naoko and the second bushi. Yet again let down by crappy photos. I was thinking of doing a nure onna-style pattern on Naoko, but the sculpting of the scales would make it a bit tricky.

By KABOCHA

Waaaa.
I'm very found!

Could we get a close up of the bushi?

Tks!

Really, really nice painting.  I really like the smooth muted colours - looks very realistic.  The base markings I think finish them off, good freehand too.

The bases remind me of the old Confrontation bases the studio models used to have and I think (even unintentionally) you have emulated that even better.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of your Ito.

Sakura is done (after several repaints of her robes and attempts at a back tattoo). 35 rice done and ready for an end of October tournament. Just Itsunagi, Ayako and Kaihime to do now.  I'll try and get the basing tutorial up next weekend.

Love the face detail! Really really well done

Ouuuch, it is just amazing!
I love the way you treat skins, the softness of the ligths on the knees, the way the ligths reflects on the hair (she must have greasy hair by the way).
The only thing that slighlty disturbs me is the blake lining around elements as the armlet, i find it too sharp.
Could a lighter tone be more adapted?

By the way, could you share the colors u use for the skin?

I'm so impressed by your work!

By Malhorme

Wonderful, great face and good arse! Skin tones are really we executed.

By Chimpenstein

Awsome painting here! The scales on Kenzo is masterly done!
Really love the bases as well...any chance we can ge a step by step to a base?

By BoBo

Beautiful work.  Gratz.

@ Malhorme. Thanks, the black lines are actually shadows from the lighting. Skin recipe (all VMC) is base cork brown, shade by adding in purple, highlight by adding basic skintone with top highlights using pastel green. @Rob, you wouldn't say that in front of your wife :P @Bobo, I'll put one up this weekend when I'm back from a business trip.

By KABOCHA

top highlights using pastel green

That is brilliant! perfect tone indeed. Is it because of the dominant color of the Ito or is it a traditonnal receipe of yours?

Tks

Can't say much more than this above. You have some talent, to say the least.

The bases are awesome so I cannot wait to see the tutorial.

By npow34
KABOCHA's picture

OK, the base tutorial is here. All you need is your base, something to block the slot, a scalpel and some modelling putty (I use green-grey milliput).  Clean your base in soapy water to remove any grease and block up the slot with either putty or a piece of balsa.  Score the surface with a scalpel to give the putty a rougher surface to adhere to.  Roll different sized balls of putty and press them onto the surface of the base, leaving a small gap between them.  Take a piece of plastic tubing or a paint brush handle and roll across the base, pressing down so that the rolled outty is flush with the lip of the base.  Then add some texture to the putty by stippling it with an old toothbrush.  Then use a sculpting tool to redefine the edges of each 'stone' making them a more regular tesselated shape.  Then fill in the gaps with something to give some texture: PVA and sand, pumice paste, flock, etc. Bob wa saru no o-ji desu. :)

All of the snake minis have sculpted scales, the ones on Naoko and Kenzo are really well defined.

I'm a big fan of the choice of these muted colors, matte finish, lighting effects - all very lifelike. Awesome job bringing out the impression of movement of the sculpts.

By contrast, the scales on kaihime kinda let down the otherwise very nice model.
Really looking forward to seeing your ayoko

Wow, that painting is amazing, and great basing technique too!

Indeed! It reminds me of a fat lass wearing fishnet stockings 2 sizes too small crying  Ayako, Itsunagi and Kaihime can wait until I've finished off an Eden Grey Kitsune.

By KABOCHA

thats a bit harsh!!... but yeh.... they just needed to be a bit smaller and crisply sculpted... kenzo's ones are phenomenally well done.

After a little break I've finally got Itsunagi done (but without any tattoos because it's sooooo lower-class, and my eyes aren't up to it) :)

They look great!

I really like the bases too. I foolishly went for basic bases but I suppose I can take my cult off their bases in the future when I can do them properly.

Very clean, very distinct highlights. Brilliant! The shading on the skin tones is extremely smooth and subtle.

It's not a hobby unless I spread myself too thin.

Thank you for that tutorial ! I need to try it...
