Dealing with Tengu

OK, so I've been having some issues with Tengu...

Hokibo is an absolute beast - between flying around (ignoring lots of terrain), 3 armor, fear, and his critcal strike... he's hard to deal with. Pair that with him working in tandem with someone like Kotenbo... it becomes extremely hard to contend with.

Any suggestions? I have most Ito models to choose from if that helps...

Hokibo is supposed to be a beast.  He's 14 rice.

The most common option is to shoot him.

If you bring a control warband, be sure to target him through a Child of Orochi so that you get the Strong Mind bonus.

Other than that, just wear out his activations while killing the rest of his warband.  If someone's brought Hokibo, the rest of the warband tends to be pretty squishy and their low health pools mean they don't deal well with Poison unless they bring a Kuroko - in which case just attack them with a Shimogamo Viper.

You no longer get to fly out of BtB with an enemy model, so a pair of Temple Bushi can probably keep Hokibo occupied for ages.

As Ret-A_Palmer suggests, indeed try to out activate your opponent or even try to tie Hokibo up in combat (just throw everything in defense with a model with some armour and at least three dice, bravery can help with the fear, several ito ashigaru have this trait). He is not tireless...
I see that Satoshi and some (at least three) Ashigaru are a nice way of out activating a warband with expensive figures. And yes, kill/tie up the healing (Ryuhobo) first.... good luck!

Kenzo with Muramasa Blade and Feint. Or Kaihime, who can give herself Armour Piercing; Hokibo doesn't have any specific defense against those. Itsunagi should be able to outfight him regardless.

Drain his Ki to stop his shenanigans, then wear him down with Ito's martial prowess and poison. Blind from Naoko should stop his feats too, and any debuff helps.

If all else fails switch to Cult and Wraith will fix him up.  : )

I feel like Kenzo + Blade is a lot better at dealing with Hokibo than Wraith. Kenzo has more rerolls than Hokibo, with the same Martial Prowess but also the Feint as a ki feat - Wraiths main selling point is the Fear 5 shenanigans along with Sharp, but he doesn't have any rerolls at all. Hokibo is fearless and 9 wounds, so it wouldn't scare him to have to fight Wraith with the +1 damage Sharp. Of course, Wraith can hunt down all the other Tengu no problems, so its not bad in a matchup against Tengu, but it'd fare worse than Kenzo who can easily get a +6 Sharp attack in.

In fairness Wraith can get a 20 inch charge through anything, can get 6 attack dice, has access to Strong, deals out Spirit Block, and can heal himself in combat so I also considered that.

At the cost of half its health, so can Kenzo, at the cost of almost half of its health. Spirit Block helps, but Kenzo is still a better choice (and this is the Ito subforum).

Don't get me wrong, I love Wraith, but its strengths fall kind of flat against Hokibo.

Thanks for all the tips!

To be honest, I never thought of just trying to tie him up with an armored model going all in on defense. I'll be trying this first next game.

I almost always take Kaihime in every game (because she's THAT good) but inevitably my opponent tries to get to her quick and shut down that nasty poisoned bow of hers.

I play Tengu myself, and it is one of my favorite strategies until I have the dice advantage (either through outnumbering or exhausting the target model) then send in the big boys (Kanut/Taliriktug) or even murder a figure with a  zephyr guard or scout of the blue gale. And sometimes to mix it up, just one dice in attack if they go all in on the attack (and you know it can't be a throw/push type attack) can do a lot of surprising damage, especially if you've shown a willingness to always be on the defensive. angel
