Let’s talk about how new I am...

Brace for backstory!

So, I’m moving back to my home town at the end of the month after living 1,000 miles away for 3 years. Turns out my old gaming store shut down(sad face,) but some locals banded together and opened a much better gaming store in its place — one which stocks some of the harder-to-find games(in my experience) such as Bushido.

We flew down this week to sign on our house and I opted to visit the store. They had a new shipment in of fresh Bushido minis still in a cardboard box waiting to be priced.  I’ll admit I bought a Jade Mamba with no intention of getting into the game because I’ve wanted the model since I saw it on the internet. Then I bought Masunagi a few days later, because he looked cool too... as I was picking him up the manager and I got to talking about games and such.

He mentioned there was no scene for Bushido - yet - because that box of minis was apparently what he was hoping would spark the interest.  I went home, spent all day yesterday watching battle reps(with A lot of Ito gameplay) and have to say the game system looks fantastic. So I took the dive and nabbed the Ito starter and Naoko.

So I’ve pretty much, at this point, bought out their stock of Ito minis(All that was left was Saburo and a Temple Bushi.)

My next purchases will definitely be dice and cards, then probably Kenzo, the bow-snake lady(Can’t recall the name) and the winged snakes.

So I do have some questions for you lot...

The store had all the faction starters, obviously, and one or two extra blisters for each... but I noticed they specifically seemed to have wider selection of troop blisters for Tengu and Yurei - so I imagine once interest picks up those are two I’ll likely see a lot of locally simply because of their accessibility.

If I were to plan some future purchases expecting to see those two in the table what units would play best against them? I know Yurei has a lot of fear effects, but what’s the typical tengu playstyle?

Also are the ‘generic’ card packs worth getting?

Oh, and the battle reports I was watching they hadn’t a wound chart card that looked like a super-handy cheat sheet - where do those come from?

1.  The pocket wound chart comes with any card back you buy.

2.  The generic card pack has many valuable items so it's worth getting.

3.  The Tengu are more vulnerable to poison than The Cult so remember that.

4.  The Tengu also have decent archers so watch for covering fire.

5.  The Cult can weather poison but are slow so try and outflank them.

6.  Look up "control tokens" and prepare accordingly.

That's a few minor tips to consider.  There's a ton of stuff I'm leaving out so as not to spoil the fun so don't be afraid to study the enemies cards.

Glad you decided to join the community and good luck.

Thanks for the info!

I’ll be putting the generic packs on my buy list too, then.  I currently have more than enough models to play at 50 points, so waiting a bit longer to get new models is no big deal. Gives me more time to paint what I’ve got anyways.

Right now my entire rules knowledge is based on battle reps and demo videos. I’ve got a 2hr plane ride tomorrow, though, so I plan to download the rules on my tablet and dive into that during the flight.

Is there any specific faction that’s good for demoing games with against Ito?

I've been considering that once I do get down to my new permanent residence I may be the only one with models and doing a few demos might drum up interest. As such I figure I could invest in a few models from a second faction to run those games with.

1.  The rules in the download section are an older version.  Bushido retainer Ret Fleafa has put together an updated version that includes the latest errata as well as the tournament rules and scenarios. Be sure to check the back of the document as some of the errata pertains to character cards as well.

His forum thread can be found here  ...  https://gctstudios.com/comment/reply/17589/31853

That should take you right to the thread.  If not then just type "rules update" in the home page search bar and scroll down till you get to the "Bushido Integrated PDF (rules, errata, and scenarios)" thread at the bottom of the first page.

Once in the thread scroll down to reply #23 and the link to the pdf will be in blue. It's the latest version.

2.  When ordering cards you might want to consider the special attack and defense card pack. You play them during the combat setup and flip them simultaneously when declaring. These cards streamline the process, contain the effects on the cards so you don't have to look them up, and add a bluffing mechanic that can be useful. If you plan on doing many demos then it might be worth getting two sets but that's up to you.

3.  My first thought for demos is DON'T GET THE NINJA.  They look cool and can be really fun to play but they're expensive glass cannons. If you don't set them up just right to work with each other they can be very frustrating. Not recommended for noobs.

Many people like to pair the Prefecture of Ryu against the Ito Clan for a demo.  They're the classic samurai that everyone is familiar with but still have a few interesting tricks up their sleeves.

Your Ito will have speed and poison.

Their Ryu will have better armor, can get guns, and have the ability to cut your head off with a single blow.

Plus later on, they can get access to a dragon. I mean come on!

With the right pieces, they can be evenly matched without too many shenanigans making things more difficult for noobs. (like leaving out witch buffs for you or lots of group combat orders for them)

However, if your opponent really likes the Prefecture, then let them know that later on, with full forces and abilities, they can set things up to get most of their army to go at once and wipe the floor with your face before the opponent can get too far in.

I would recommend 3 minis per side at 25 rice per faction during demos though.

Final Thoughts...

I find the game has the ability to sell itself with unique combat mechanics, the number of factions, and the diversity of playstyles between them. This includes everyone looking forward to the upcoming Minamoto "Bear" Clan.

There are no required models so players can get what they want and each faction has several ways to play them.

It's a micro skirmish game on a 2x2 board and usually only 6 - 8 models per side so the cost of a tournament powerful list is still far cheaper than most miniature games. Therefore it makes a great side item if they're coming from a larger more expensive mini game

The core rules are very digestible so after a few games many players just have a cheat sheet for character abilities if they need them

The community is very close-knit so questions can be readily answered on the forums or even faster on the facebook page with many answers coming from retainers and playtesters.

Your sentence structure suggests American but wherever you're going let people know and see if there are other players out there.

It's the best miniature game I've ever played so enjoy and again, welcome.

Thanks again for the response!

Got through the rules, things look really straight forward which is nice.

Assembled my Ito last night and I'm looking to make a purchase of some Ryo models now...

Honestly I didn't give the Prefecture a second look until I read your response here, I just kind of thought "Regular Samurai? Booooring."

After digging into their clan I actually really like their shenanigans, especially Atsushi and the Dog... that combo seems insane for objective scenarios.

Needless to say, I think Prefecture will now be my secondary warband.

I was curious if there's a resource anywhere online where it might be possible to search models by traits and stuff rather than manually digging through the store page?

You can use the file from this post : https://gctstudios.com/forum/kitsune-0-4

Or there is an app on android but it's not up to date.
