Guess what... another new guy!

Hey folks, so I've just ordered my brother the Temple boxed set plus some stuff (the gorilla, cards and dice) for his birthday and he ordered me the Ito starter, the Child of Orochi, the cards and dice for mine (2 days, and 3 years apart). I believe this will give me around 40 rice of stuff to start with. Any suggestions for what to get next? I was thinking another naga type; Taisei, Yuui Ito or Mizuki, but so much choice. Plus I haven't opened the rule book so not sure what anything does so want to be sensible. Any advice?

1.)  The rule book is great for world background and art.  It's fantastic.  But if your just learning there is a printer friendly updated version that includes all the eratas and the tournament pack.  It was developed by the retainers right here on these forums.  The link is here.

I found it easier to use when teaching new players.

2.)  The fact that there's no "must have" models like a crew leader or warcaster nonsense means that you can just play the models that look cool.

However, consider your play style carefully and look at things this way.  Most of the naga are straight up warriors.  They hit hard in hand to hand and most of them generally can't be knocked around.  They can also slide through terrain with ease allowing for quick repositions should the need arise.

Most of the Shisai are spell casters.  Powerful witches who can poison from a distance, pull Ki off enemies, paralize enemies, allow you to control your opponents models, and buff your own lesser bodyguards.

You will get the character Sakura in the starter box.  She will benefit from the Child Of Orochi's abilities.  The child can be a Ki battery for Shisai models as well as a range extender and, if necessary, a sacrifice model.   These two characters are a good start to developing a strategy for a witch heavy list should you chose to go that way.  And the best part is these are just TWO ways to play Ito!

3.)  The one thing that runs across the board is the "Blood Of Orochi" trait.  Study it well.  I've seen many a player forget it in the heat of battle and it might have made things much easier.  Most characters that aren't completely human will have it.  The Akimoto character in your starter set will have level 2.  Blood Of Orochi will let you give the poison trait to anybody, and not knowing who will get it at the start of the turn will bother your oponents.  This might also lead you to an archer heavy list.  Raining poison from a distance is not a bad thing.

You'll notice that I'm not mentioning characters you don't already own.  There is a sublime sublty to force selection and I wouldn't want to rob you of that by just telling you what happens to work for me.  I'm sure you will enjoy the hunt for just the right model.

4.)  I will assume that your brother will be the early oponent in your learning games so ..........  Watch the girl with the gorilla.  She will sit in back and launch powerful combat boosts to her own guys.  If you can get a fast moving character around there early then cut her head off.  This also applies to the rice farmers.  They are buff batteries for the team so don't be afraid to target them if your not confident you can take out a monk.

REMEMBER POISON.  Proper use of this will force your brother to split his KI between healing his own models or boosting attacks against you.  Don't let him just power up Kenko (starter box) and wail on you.

If your going after Master Ekusa then your best bet is Itsunagi Ito.  But don't fall into the trap of feeling you have to kill him.  He's slow moving and benefits from other models so taking everyone else out will allow you to run around grabbing objectives with no way for him to outmaneuver you.

Well thats a few words on where to start.  This is my favorite game so I hope you enjoying discovering its possibilities as much as I did.  Enjoy and good luck!

Hi and welcome to a great game :) On the subject I´d pick up some fighty model for next to stabilize your line. Itsunagi who comes in the starter is the games biggest glass cannon, thus it can be prudent to have another serious fighter to switch with. Mizuki is a wizard and thrives with a screen of mates around her, but Tasei, Kenzo, Masunagi, Yuui etc. are all nice choices.

Thank you for all the fantastic advice :) I ordered Mizuki, Yuui and the two-headed snake in the end. This should keep me going for the next month or so, and it turns out that a guy we know plays Cult so we've got a few games set up. Downloaded the rules, found our hard copy of the rule book, then it got soaked in the Scottish weather so back to the download for the time being! Sadly Monday is a holiday here so will face to wait on everything arriving, but we've got a modular Asian-themed board we made for Malifaux so I can add the finishing touches to a copse of cherry blossom trees in the meantime :)

Ross Silvers should have some Prefecture stuff if you're in the same wargaming group up there.

Being an Ito player, in addition to what others have said I would recommend Kenzo. He's a beast.

MS of 4 with the potential 2 Ki boost is nuts in combination with his powerful attack, first strike, martial prowess, and poison. On top of that, he can't be knocked prone and has armor. YIKES

Plus, he's an absolutely cool looking model!!

If you can't already tell, he's one of my favourite models!
