What Problems will I have?

Forums:

I just got into this game and ordered my figures.  I bought the Kaihei (2 in the pack) and the Alpha as well as Yusha and  Wu-Zang and Zuba (from the starter set).  I love the Oni and the doglike creatures!!

Anyway, I have read that an all Oni force is no good so I am asking what type of obstacles I will face?  My opponents play Tengu, Ryu, Temple, and the Cult.

Now with the Savage Wave Special Card pack 2 the all oni force is awesome, and is only with Oni, Beasts and Slaves. I'will recomend you to buy Jun and The Nian.

Have fun!

A full oni warband used to have the problem where you just didn't have a lot of models and people could out-scenario you while running around trying not to die.  With the Alphas theme (which means you lose out on Tra-peng, but that's not a big deal) the oni are all cheaper and now that the new oni slave profiles are out, you have the ability to protect them from a lot of unwanted combat.  Also, Fear (6) is a thing.

Against Tengu:
There's no way you're going to stop them going where they want to go.  Expect fights from all sorts of weird directions.  The tengu themselves don't hit very hard, but it's quite easy for them to put your in situations where they can get high success levels.  You want to squish the normal tengu as fast as possible, and be careful of the named Hilltribe Warrior (that's Taliriktug).  If you can keep him from being the active model, he's not too much of a threat.  I wouldn't even bother attacking Sojobo with anything over 4 rice though, just burn through his activations as fast as you can.  He's not especially dangerous, but he's really good at not getting hit.

Against Temple:
Temple is generally regarded as a really difficult match up for Savage Wave, simply because the monks have so many special attacks/defences that they can use to keep the oni out of the fight.  Slams and combo-attacks are both very good tools for either getting the oni out of the game temporarily or doing some ludicrous damage.  Avoid putting your figures in positions where they can colide with each other after a slam.  My crowning glory when I played Temple was slamming Zuba over 3 bakemono: that's 5 activations burned from a single slam attack.

Against Prefecture:
Any time a Prefecture samurai rolls for damage is a bum-clenching moment as they can simply delete your precious figures.  Matsu is worthing knowing about as she brings a ranged slam, so having a plan to get to her and get her out of the game is extremely useful.  Same with Bikou, who can shoot often enough to remove a valuable model each turn if left unattended.  The main problem with fighting against Prefecture is the sheer amount of armour, and the first strike+push attack (0) the Ryu Yarimen bring.  They just keep pushing you out of combat and avoid having to take any real damage for as long as possible.

Against Cult:
The Cult of Yurei generally brings a lot of offensive Ki feats that will ruin whatever plan you had.  Failing that, your expensive models are likely to end up fighting rat swarms the entire game.  Oni/kaihei don't have a problem with the sheer amount of Fear the Cult brings, but the bakemono really do.  I'm afraid you're just going to have to play against it a lot to figure out how to get around all their tricks.  Also, don't even think about trying to simply kill a kairai.  Slam them away and ignore them.  When you think you've killed them, 90% of the time (rather than the supposed 50% the dice odds say are corrent) they're going to simply make that Rise test and you'll have wasted valuable activations.

Well, if there is theme force for an all Oni and beast list I am all in!!!  I am not so sure what is special about the Nian but everyone seems to like it....it is one strange looking creature.

My  impression of him was to send him in to a valuable target, instill fear and/or prone, then other models (bakemono etc.) come in for the kill.

Can bakemono actually kill things? They look borderline ridiculous as serious fighters......

No, they certainly cannot.  Usually.  What you want to do with them is scenario actions and burn enemy activations when you can.

Back to the initial question.

The summary is thus - the "Alphas'" themed warband that comes with the Savage Wave 2nd Card Pack makes an 'All-Oni' list quite viable. I've currently played with the following for my 35-rice list:

- Zuba

- Rashka (or Bobata + a 1 rice attachment for one of the two Oni)

- x2 Slaves

- Jun

Turn 1: Have the Slaves bleed Rashka as he is the more durable of the two. Then run the two big guys up the field followed by their slaves.

Turn 2+: Rage both Oni to give you 5-6 Ki, then mash them into the enemy's face. On a charge Zuba can usually one-shot kill most enemies with his 3d6+8 damage roll(provided of course his SL is high enough - and it usually is with 3MS plus brutal), and Rashka can split attack with Knock back to tire the enemy out. Keep Jun nearby to keep your Oni alive if hit with a high SL attack, and have your other x2 slaves seek objectives or offer an outnumbering bonus against exhausted enemies.

Later turns - have your big guys kill off the enemy big guys, then get them engaged with the one remainin weak enemy you chose to leave alive; commiting all dice to defense (you don't want to kill your last enemy as the game will end immediately). Have your other forces grab whatever VP's you can and aim for a late-game win.

Oni Warbands are quite brutal, but the game of Bushido is about tactics. And a tactic to be used in a Brutal warband is to kill EVERYONE but leave one survivor alive - allowing you to then clean up.

Hope that helps some

Oh also - the benefit of Alphas allows you to improve the fear of one of your Oni. Use it on whichever one looks like it will be at risk of getting killed (for me its often Zuba when I send him on a Charge - max fear is a great way of keeping him alive to repeat the bull rush on the following turn)
