Gashadokuro are mainly mindless, but somehow Satou Hatchi is not. It’s become apparent that not even his death can make him forget his extensive training and use of his now-mouldering battle gear and rusty weapons. Even more disturbing to his Yuta mistresses’ is that he has begun leading other skeletons into battle, much as he did in life! Usually, when the Yuta fashion a Gashadokura, only the bones break the earth’s skin to rise and serve again; the intellect and life spark of who they once were are long gone.
The Ghost of Fuwa is a tale older than the Empire's rulership of the Jwar Isles. In the story, the spirit appears and causes suffering and sorrow in Fuwa until a lowly monk tries to banish it, learning it was wronged in life and must be appeased. Its ghostly hands escape the lantern looking for flesh to squeeze and choke, such a spirit is an obvious draw for the cult of Yurei. How much of the story is true, we cannot guess, as it comes to us from the Ito clan, allies of duplicity.
Unburied warriors that are left to rot under the mud of battlefields are ripe pickings for shugenja and others of their ilk. In particular, these witches haunt these sites raising the bones, sinew, and rotting armour to do their bidding. That which claws its way up from under are called Gashadokuro, and these mindless killing machines do their mistress’s bidding without question. However, Akoshi is somewhat different. There seems to be the briefest glimmer of who he was in life, residing somewhere inside him. Akoshi was an accomplished ashigaru in life and remains so in death.
Shokuji eats until he can eat no more. Is it hunger? Perhaps it was in the beginning, when he was a starving orphan, sleeping rough and alone on the streets. But over time, it’s now more compulsion than anything else. He may consume his weight in food every day, but he is empty inside no matter how much he eats. The Kami of Gluttony is now bound to him, twinned to his soul. Shokuji unleashes Gluttony to fight his foes but has a far more sinister trick up his grease and sauce stained sleeve.

In life, Hikari was one of four sisters who found their shugenja abilities were amplified when they worked as a coven. The fateful night the sisters were offered a bargain with Yurei, the others readily accepted the power they would gain but Hikari stood firm and refused, knowing the bargain would never be anything but a yolk around their necks and a pathway to evil. The bargain was offered only to the whole coven so her sisters murdered her and accepted the bargain as three Yuta.
