Numachi, the Swamp’s Unmaking

The first rumours came from hunters. “Whatever it is, it came out of the swamps, and we’ve never seen anything like it,” they whispered.  Others spoke of a creature that ripped a man in two, its shape shifting with every heartbeat. Those who survived swore its form reflected the fears of anyone who looked upon it. When it reached the outskirts of the settlement, even the guard‑dogs fell silent.  “It overpowered them,” one villager muttered, trembling. “Worse still… it now looks like them. In part.” From that night on, the people felt it constantly, a presence, unseen but watching. Doors were barred, charms were hung, and prayers were whispered to indifferent heavens. They thought they killed it once. They were wrong.  The moment they lowered their guard, Numachi returned, and the price was paid in screams. Some who glimpsed it lost their minds outright. There was no logic to its form only shifting, writhing impossibility. In time, the few surviving villagers could only agreed on one thing “Proof the Heavens must be empty.” Numachi continued to stalk the marshes, mutating without reason, guided by instincts older than language. Its presence twisted the air, a walking mind‑maw that devoured sanity, and the silent tread of a perfect stalker.
